Edmund Heines

Ernst Röhm and Edmund Heines.
Ernst Röhm was an imperial German Army officer and eventually a Nazi leader. He was the founder of the Storm Batallion, and the Nazi Party militia. Röhm was a part of Hitler's inner circle with Hermann Göring and Joseph Goebbels. All three men were allowed to address Hitler with the German familiar du, but only Röhm was allowed to call Hitler "Adolph" rather than mein Führer.
In 1934 Hitler had him executed as a potential rival. One of the politically difficulties Röhm created was his open homosexuality. In 1931, the Munich Post published letters in which Röhm describes his sexual relationships with men.
It is presumed Röhm had a sexual relationship with his deputy, Edmund Heines, who Hitler also had executed in his great political purge, The Night of Long Knives. Heines had been discovered by the SS in bed with an 18 year old boy. When ordered to get up and dressed, he refused. The SS informed Hitler, who, the story goes, appeared in the bedroom.
(HITLER stands before HEINES, who is presumably in bed)
HITLER
Leave me alone with Heines.
But take that schwuler boy from my sight.
Heines, you are under arrest and must be taken into custody.
HEINES
On what charges?
HITLER
I would assume that is obvious.
HEINES
May I ask,
why now
I am considerable sufficient enough of a threat to be arrested?
HITLER
You have always been a sufficient threat;
now is simply the right time.
Heines, get out of bed
and accompany us.
HEINES
No.
HITLER
You must.
HEINES
No.
HITLER
This is no time to be concerned with
pride.
That is gone.
You have no more shame.
I was told they found you
with your dick in the boy's---
HEINES
I will not leave this bed.
HITLER
You have five minutes to get up.
If you do not,
your unwillingness I will interpret as an act of aggression,
and I will have you shot.
Do you understand me?
HEINES
Yes.
HITLER
I will do it.
HEINES
I know.
HITLER
I am not bluffing.
HEINES
I know.
HITLER
Will you get up?
HEINES
No.
HITLER
You cannot win.
You cannot walk away and have a normal life.
HEINES
I never had a normal life.
HITLER
Very true,
you are one of the degenerates
who threatens the biological sanctity
of our race.
One of many we have ferreted out.
HEINES
Ferret out, you’ve always known.
You simply didn’t want to do anything about it.
HITLER
What is the point, may I ask?
What do you hope to gain?
Time?
Mercy?
A pardon?
Or are you a coward?
HEINES
I’m not a coward.
I understand what will happen,
but I will not leave this bed.
HITLER
You have four minutes.
Will you name names?
I might be more understanding if you helped us.
HEINES
I don’t need to name names.
You know exactly what men
you want.
HITLER
I don’t know why I am bothering to wait.
I’m getting weak with compassion.
Why should I give you a chance to live?
Why should I care at all what happens to you?
You obviously don’t care what happens to you.
HEINES
I care very much.
HITLER
Perhaps you don’t understand the true danger.
You still think I’m bluffing.
HEINES
No, I don’t.
HITLER
You underestimate me.
You think I’m weak and full of feeling
like a girl.
(calls off)
Guard!
Shoot the schwuler boy.
HEINES
NO!
HITLER
Do it now!
(gunshot off)
HITLER
Three minutes.
No, less than that.
HEINES
He was just a boy.
HITLER
He was a weak degenerate.
Now, with his loss,
all of Germany is stronger.
Don't tell me you're upset.
Was he the love of your life?
Is your heart cracking into tiny pieces?
HEINES
I met him three hours ago in a park
next to a boarding school.
I didn't even know his name
and I wasn't planning to ask.
But no one,
not even a schwuler deserves
to be dragged out into the street naked
and shot.
HITLER
That's exactly what we will do with you.
We will pull you out of bed
and everyone will see what disgusting
stains and crusty fluids
are all over you
and laugh
as we put you against a wall
and splatter your brains over it.
You will die
like a rabid dog,
pissing itself in its madness.
Is that better
than leaving your bed on your own volition?
HEINES
Yes.
HITLER
I fail to understand why.
Edmund, we barely know one another.
Of course I've heard stories about you,
but I never quite believed the worse:
such as, you always play the woman with men.
For which the prison sentence is the worst of all.
But this,
this behavior,
I never would have thought that you would resist so much.
I never thought you were so cowardly.
HEINES
If I was a coward,
Herr Hitler,
I would have jumped out of bed at once.
You really want to know why I won't get up?
I believe I have less than two minutes.
HITLER
Yes.
HEINES
Do you really need to know?
HITLER
Yes.
HEINES
Does it frighten you that I'm not responding to your threats
or violence?
That I'm not begging for my life,
or that the murder of that young boy
didn't tear me apart?
I overestimated you, Herr Hitler:
I thought that you,
of all people,
would understand.
When you walked through that door I thought,
He understands.
He respects me
and he's come here,
out of respect to give me one last chance.
Because my strength is an asset.
And to lose me,
despite me being a degenerate,
would weaken him.
I will tell you:
in this bed,
well, not necessarily this bed,
but in any bed,
I am free.
When the SS broke in the door,
I knew I was dead.
I am a dead man.
My last moments that I have,
I will spend a free man,
as a schwuler,
and nothing has pleased me more
than to have you sit here for five minutes
and smell the dried come and shit
that stains these sheets and my body.
You can smell the sodomy in the air,
like a ghost that's licking your neck.
That's the tingling you're feeling Herr Hitler,
that's what's making your hair stand on end.
To get up of my own volition is a personal betrayal.
I will die a schwuler,
and not as I lived,
in hiding.
I think my time is now up.
